The PS3 eBay Solution For Entrepreneurs
eBay Optimization November 20th, 2006
Everyone knows there’s been a huge PlayStation 3 dump on eBay as many techie entrepreneurs try to cash in one the short supply (2 million world wide) and high demand. Here’s the breakdown of Playstation 3’s on eBay’s Marketplace at the time of this post.
Prior to the Friday launch of the Playstation 3 over 3,533 systems were sold with an average selling price of $1,788.88. Since the debut and wide availability of the system on Friday (supply shot up on eBay) the average selling price skyrocketed to $2,618.47. From a marketer’s and even a lamens interpertation there is something fishy about the supply and demand curve of eBay’s effect on us this holiday season.

In a single month from before the system was available to being very widely available the price has doubled. On a product life cycle graph, the PS3 on eBay is in the growing phase and quickly entering the maturity stage. Within a few weeks we will start to see the prices of the system fall at a slower than average pace. This is mainly due to the holiday season, Sony’s great idea to ’shorter supply’, and avid eBay entrepreneurs who are not sticking to capitalism. It suprises even me that the various eBayers are not trying to start their auction’s lower or throw off the average. Where are the outliers trying to sell a system for $1,000 with a “Buy It Now” option? Well, only a fool would be dumb enough to be an outlier on eBay.
So you want proof that the slope is going to be falling soon? I did a little research on some other auction websites to see how they are handling the influx of supply for the Playstation 3.
Yahoo Auctions - With 93 Playstation 3’s on Yahoo auctions, only 25% have active bidders. The average price for the console is roughly $800 for those with active bids.
AuctionFire - Yeah, you probably haven’t heard of Auction fire but there’s around 10 auctions for the console. Only a couple have active bids and they’re under $1,000.
MSN Shopping - Is Bill Gates retarded? I couldn’t find a single Playstation 3 console when doing a search.
Froogle.com - Get your items exposed to millions upon millions more on Google’s Froogle shopping engine. I’ve used them before when I used to run eCommerce websites for a costume shop. When eBay trickles off it would be a good idea to use Froogle to sell your Playstation 3 because a lot of mothers and fathers (baby boom crowd) use Froogle to shop for their kids.
Amazon.com - This is weird, but Amazon has restricted people from selling Playstation 3’s. Keep checking back. They are also going to be selling XBOX 360’s on Thursday for only $100 so try to pick one of those up and resell it. When I checked out my affiliate gaming website, PS3GameSearch.com and clicked on the PS3 bubble it took me to a listing with two hidden used Playstation 3’s going for $3,000 a piece. Get yours listed over there to turn a profit.
