Google on 9/11 And Thoughts Remembered
Marketing News September 11th, 2006
It’s 9/11 and no I didn’t forget. In fact, we will never forget. On 9/11 I was only 16 years old and still in High School. At the time the towers were hit I was in Spanish II class and someone had whispered the “Trade Towers” were just hit. I, being naive, had no idea what they were talking about. Leaving for lunch around noon I saw a huge crowd of students in the cafeteria staring blankly at the one television in the room. When I made it home I was awstruck by what I saw and took the rest of the day off to watch the events unfold.
I want to share with you what Google was doing when this happened now 5 years ago when the planes hit the World Trade Center. More than 80% of all searches on Google that day were related to the terrorist attacks and search queries were 60x greater than the previous day. Roughly 6,000 queries for “cnn” were conducted per minute.
