Facebook Regional Move Not Too Bright
Online Marketing September 27th, 2006
Facebook is getting bigger. So big, that soon Facebook will burst through the side of a concrete wall in an oversized red jug and yell “Oh Yeah!” (pardon the joke).
Not too long ago, MySpace, RateMyBody, and HotorNot were the only social networking sites that teenagers and young adults had online. At the time, Facebook was nothing more than an online directory project of Mark Zuckerberg for Harvard University Students. It wasn’t long before the Facebook phenom caught on and spread to Ivy League schools and just recently opened its’ doors to high school students. Not too many students predicted that Facebook would open its’ doors to regions across the but as the company considers a $1 billion buyout by Yahoo!, web sites like MySpace are losing their niche. With the move, MySpace won’t be the only “anyone can join” social networking powerhorse online.
I’m expecting a lot of heated debate over this move. the exponential growth of Facebook to tens of millions of new users will create many problems very fast. It’s as if Facebook (currently) were the cool high school ‘clique’ and now Facebook wants to open their doors to all the ‘millions of others.’ And Facebook users are testy. When Facebook recently introduced Mini Feeds and switched up their homepage, millions of Facebook users created petitions to switch Facebook back and threatened a boycott. I even created BanFacebook.com over the concern.
Facebook is playing the Myspace game and not focusing on what they do best. What they do best is creating the ‘niche’ and not being like everyone else. It would be smart if Facebook exec’s stepped back and looked at their SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) one more time. Facebook users are already threatening to leave and I’ve seen a new crop of alternative Facebook sites pop up everyday.
