How Can We Profit From Viral Videos?
Online Marketing, Website Development July 13th, 2006
Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz, the masterminds behind the exploding Mentos and Diet Coke video that has been sweeping the nation are a clear example of how marketing can work.
Â
The duo put the idea in the bunson burner nearly 8 months ago and thought of making the video. They have received an estimated 4.1 million video views.
Â
Imagine the exposure they could have associated with it if they had been ingenious enough to attach a product or service to their publicity. I find it dumbfounding how some of these You Tubers on the internet today are creating crazy videos and not thinking of the connection between the exposure and what could be the end gain of the exposure. Sure, the Mentos / Diet Coke duo have managed to rake in roughly $25,000 with an ad revenue sharing deal with online video service Revver, however, they could be truly cashing in if they thought out their next big venture.

My mentos…The viral video fad will be around for awhile. America was so attracted to the “America’s Funniest Videos†series of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s that this sweep of viral videos will surely last several decades. My only fear is the commercialism of the spectrum of exposure for these videos might end in a lot of “spamming†type problems.

To make money with viral videos you need to think publicity. My 85% / 15% press release and publicity rule is that you need to provide 85% information, or comedy in the case of viral videos, and 15% selling something!

Attaching a URL to the bottom of your viral video might be the first thing you do. Second, why not wear a unique t shirt in your video and have the link on the video direct a viewer to a web site that sells the shirts and other products earning YOU a profit
