Truth About Search Engine Submission
Search Engine Optimization, Website Optimization July 13th, 2006
Search engine submission is easy but overly complicated and over dramatized by many web masters.
If you are a businessman looking to get a little added exposure to your pre-exsisting web site you do not necessarily need to enlist in the services of an ‘internet guru’ who will claim to get your site listed on 5,000 search engines and directories.
Simply look at the statistical breakdown:
Google at 36.4%
Yahoo! at 30.6%ÂÂ
MSN at 16.5%
AOL at 8.9%
Jeeves at 5.5%
Google, Yahoo, and MSN account for nearly 80% of all searches on the internet. That’s only 3 search engines accounting for the very large majority of searches on the internet. Factoring in AOL and Ask Jeeves you arrive at 95% of all searches on the internet coming from those top 5 search engines.
The other 4,995 search engines these ‘internet gurus’ will be submitting your web site do exsist. But they are made by start up businesses trying to capitalize on Google’s recent success.
My suggestion would be to take your web site and submit it yourself. Prior to doing so, please look into search engine and web site optimization services some of these web designer gurus offer to help your web site stand out among the competition on Google though. You might end up in the ’sandbox’ or bottom of the search results if you dont employ or enlist the services of a highly trained search engine optimizer.
After you look into search engine optimization, be sure to submit your web site manually to DMOZ.com which is headed by AOL and by far the most popular directory on the internet with a very high market share amongst directories.
In addition, take the intiative of self promotion. Don’t feel guilty by not getting scammed by these web designers touting the ‘5,000 listed’ mark. Look at the facts.

Editors Note: Please note that yes, having 5,000 link backs by being listed on many search engines is theoretically beneficial. However, the quality of those search engines including their page ranks must be taken into account for every submission.
